ENERGY MARKET IN TURKEY

Energy consumption in Turkey reached 290,447 GWh. Electricity consumption increased 289,815 GWh in the same period. Besides production, Turkey’s installed capacity reached 91,352 MW.

Production - Installed Capacity (GWh)

This power was supplied by independent producer companies (67.72%), public (EUAS and EUAS affiliated) (21.44%), special model production companies (BO, BOT, OLT) (3.93%) and unlicensed production companies (6.91%).

2019 INSTALLED CAPACITY BY TYPE OF POWER PLANT

At the end of 2019, the distribution of installed capacity according to resource was as follows: 31.2% from hydroelectricity, 52.3% from thermal, 8.3% from wind, 1.7% from geothermal and 6.6% from solar.

At the end of 2019, the number of operational power plants in Turkey reached 8,586 of which 680 were hydro, 68 were coal fired thermal, 275 were wind, 54 were geothermal, 334 were NGC, 6,901 were PV and 274 were various other.

Significant improvements took place in the Turkish energy market in the name of independence and transparency following the foundation of the Energy Markets Operation Co. (EPIAS) which triggered an increase in the share of independent producers due to continuing privatisations throughout 2019. Tenders were also announced to encourage the private sector to incorporate coal fields and renewable resources sites into the energy production system with the aim of utilising domestic resources and reduce foreign dependence for energy.

Similar to global trends, the share of renewable energy in total installed capacity is increasing in Turkey. In 2019, renewable energy accounted for 47.66% of the country’s installed capacity. Again, consistent with the global energy market, the share of solar power is expected to increase in Turkey in 2020 and the years to follow. The total installed capacity of unlicensed solar power plants in 2019 reached 5,987 MW.

Fluctuations in electricity sales prices and foreign currency rates experienced in recent years continued during 2019, making the Renewable Energy Resources Support Mechanism (RESM) more appealing for independent producers. 817 power plants with an installed capacity of 21 GW qualified to benefit from RESM in 2019. The distribution of installed capacity is 461 hydroelectric plants with 12,372 MW, 165 wind farms with 6,456 MW, 49 geothermal plants with 1,404 MW, 125 biomass plants with 654 MW and 17 PV plants with 163 MW.

TOTAL SUPPLY

Total supply in 2019 was 290,361 GWh. The share of fossil fuel and renewable resources in total supply was 58.9% to 41.91%. Details have been provided below.
